A severe winter storm blasted prefectures along the Sea of Japan coast on Monday, December 19, bringing frigid temperatures and heavy snow.
Record snow was observed in Niigata and Fukushima prefectures. Motorists were stranded on highways during the morning rush with some reporting up to 5 hours of being stuck on roads.
