Globally renowned forensic physician and activist Şebnem Korur Fincancı released from pre-trial detention
Globally renowned forensic physician and human rights activist Şebnem Korur Fincancı has been released in Istanbul, Turkey, on January 11. Fincanci is one of the authors of the UN Istanbul Protocol. Over the years, she has helped over 17,000 victims of torture.
The Head of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) was arrested on October 27 for "spreading terrorist propaganda" about the alleged "use of chemical weapons" by Turkey in Iraq and Syria.
Dr. Fincanci was sentenced to two years, eight months, and 15 days in prison. However, the Istanbul 24th High Criminal Court ordered her release from pre-trial detention while she appeals the verdict.
The footage shows friends and relatives greeting the physician with flowers outside Bakırköy Women's Closed Prison, Istanbul.
The video features an interview with Fincancı:
01:03:01 - 01:18:37
Sebnem Korur Fincanci: "Of course, as physicians, our priority will be human health and we will be against wars. We will do our best to prevent all kinds of weapons, prohibit their use and eliminate them."
01:40:34 - 01:51:31
Sebnem Korur Fincanci: "It is the responsibility of all of us to stand against all these attempts that are harmful to all beings, for the earth we live on, and for the universe."
