An Artist Makes A Sugar Painting in Haikou, China
This footage was filmed and produced 22 January 2023.
An artist makes a sugar painting in Haikou, Hainan Province, China. Sugar painting is a kind of traditional folk handicraft. The tools used are only a spoonful and a spatula. The sugar is usually red and white sugar plus a little caramel and boiled on the stove with a warm fire until it is ready to be used for casting and molding.
When drawing the shape, the artist scooped up the melted sugar juice with a small soup spoon and cast it quickly back and forth on the stone slab to draw the shape. The hand skill of the folk artist is the key to the shape. When the shape is complete, then use a small spatula knife to scoop up the sugar painting, stick on the skewer. Sugar painting is an authentic folk painting, a distinctive street art, and a popular craft food.
