ROME-IN THE SKIES! STUNNING DRONE IMAGES AND VIDEO SHOWS ROME'S ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE AS IT’S NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE
A renowned drone pilot has produced a whirlwind tour of some of the world’s most famous landmarks as he captured a bird’s eye view of Rome as it’s never been seen before.
Pio Andrea Peri, 33, was given special permission to fly his drone around the ancient landmarks of the Italian capital to create a unique snapshot of the city.
He used the footage to create a breathtaking video, which showcases the history of Rome combined with its cosmopolitan culture.
From the historic Colosseum to the Pantheon temple, the iconic buildings can be viewed from angles not usually seen as he swoops in and out of them, capturing them from above and up close.
Pio said: "I am one of the few pilots who have flown in first person view in Rome, it is really difficult to think of flying in this way in the midst of such valuable monuments so I consider myself to be a very lucky pilot.
"I had a lot of excitement flying a few centimetres from such important monuments, I had never seen so much beauty from above, to see the inside of the colosseum, or the dome of San Pietro, this really gave me unique emotions.
"When people ask me, 'what do you like about Rome?' I answer ‘everything' because it really is the eternal city."
Filmed in the evening, the elliptical amphitheatre shape of the Colosseum can be seen in all its glory, the windows and arches lit with a dim light, creating a stunning effect.
In another part of the series, the unique 448.1 feet high dome of St Peter's Basilica can be seen in glorious definition, the legendary burial site of Jesus' closest disciple seen from a completely new angle.
To complete the stunning project, Pio was granted a special licence, which allowed him to travel all over the city with his equipment for three days.
The licence is hard to get, and must be processed 15 days before any filming starts, meaning being able to obtain footage like this is extremely rare.
Pio, who lives in Taormina, Sicily, added: "I travelled all over Rome for three days, the first day to study the type of flight to do for each monument, I chose the best moments of light, which I prefer in all my works.
"I started right from the monument, which in my opinion is the most beautiful and most impressive in history, continuing to the altar of the fatherland and passing by the Pantheon, unique places full of history.
"Without a doubt the Colosseum struck me the most, a unique place in the world."
