HAIR-EDITARY! Family has five generations of females…and they are united over their love of hairdressing Part 2/2
A family now has five generations of females and they are united in their love of hairdressing.
Evelyn Perris is only 19-months-old and joins a proud line of women in a family headed by her great-great-grandmother Kathleen Green, 102.
The tot is Emily Titmuss’ first child and in addition to her great-gran, the 22-year-old, has been able to call on mum Wendy Titmuss, 56, and her gran Lynda Osbourne, 75, for support too.
Something which resonates throughout this family, who are all from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire is hairdressing.
Emily, Lynda and Kathleen all chose this career path, and little Evelyn is also showing signs of taking the same route.
The tot loves role-playing as a hairdresser.
Only Wendy chose another career but she grew up around the family salon and loves getting her hair done.
Lynda worked in her mum Kathleen’s salon as a Saturday girl, while Emily has carried on the original salon name of ‘Elite Hair’.
When Kathleen was born back in October 1920, David Lloyd George was the Prime Minister and she has experienced a total of 25 PM’s during her lifetime.
Emily said:“Hairdressing is a massive part of our family that has affected each generation.
“It all started with my great-nan Kathleen, her and my grandad owned their own salon, which my nan Lynda used to spend her free time in.
“My great-nan continued hairdressing up until lockdown in 2020 so she would have been around 99 when she had to stop due to restrictions.
“She used to help out in a care home; doing up women’s hair who were even younger than her.
“When I was younger I remember sitting in my nan’s salon so often.”
Emily - engaged to Albert - added: “Every time we had an inset day at school that’s where we’d spend it.
“We’d chat to the women, help out around the salon and customers would help us with our homework.
“Spending so much time in that environment prepared me for when I started my own career and I chose to go down the same route.
“The only one who didn’t take much interest in hairdressing was my mum Wendy, but we all love to be pampered.
“That includes Evelyn, and we’ll often take my great-nan to the salon at age 102 to have her hair curled.
“When we make a trip to the salon, Evelyn loves to sit with my nan and wears a perm hat like her.
“Evelyn has definitely shown an interest with playing with hair so we may have another hairdresser in the family.”
For such a close family the past three years have been rather difficult due to Covid restrictions.
But Evelyn arrived just in time as the rules were eased, and it means they can spend quality time together with the new addition.
Emily added “Lockdown was difficult not seeing each other as often but we’re making the most of it now and spending as much time together as we can.
“As a family we see each other three or four times a week, this either involves just visiting each other's houses or my nan’s salon which she still works in regularly.
“We will go out on walks together to the park as my great-nan is still so fit and healthy.
“At 102 years old she can still touch her toes which is very impressive.”
Emily has received so much advice and support from her family as she starts her journey in motherhood.
She added “We’re so blessed to be a five generation family and it is something we really treasure.
“Evelyn is so lucky to be born into this huge family, we’re all out-going, bubbly, independent women and I know she’ll be the same.
“I have received so much support from my family; parenting has changed so much over the years but they’ve given me so much advice which can be applied to every generation.
“My great-nan Kathleen has told me to do it my way, to make the most of motherhood and really enjoy it.
“Back in her day, parenting was so different for example children were potty trained so much earlier
“However, I’ve really found that her advice has been something I can apply to my life now.”
