Sweetest cut: Woman battling chemo has friends and family cut individual portions of hair
"Cutting my hair with my friends and family was a hard but amazing experience," says Kelly, who is facing chemotherapy and decided to create a wig with her hair in Portland, Oregon on April 1. "My friends Connie, Kelsey, Molly, Amy, and Ali and then my sisters Leilani and Melinda, my sister-in-law Lauren, my mom Diane and my husband were all there and helped cut off one ponytail at a time."
Kelly explains that each loved one helped encourage her and make the experience as fun as possible, by sharing one thing that was annoying about hair with each ponytail that was cut. "With each snip, we would say one thing that was annoying about hair to make me laugh," she recalls.
Despite the emotional difficulty of the experience, Kelly's friends and family were a source of strength and support throughout. "It was really important for me to have them there with me," she says. "We laughed, cried, and made memories that I will always cherish." After cutting her hair, the group dyed her new short hair pink.
Kelly's story is an inspiring reminder of the power of community and the importance of finding joy and love even in the midst of difficult times.
Despite Kelly posting it to her TikTok on May 3, the clip racked up 7 million views in less than 24 hours.
