Dozens of patriotic volunteers took six hours to create a 100ft sand drawing of a Union Jack flag featuring a giant image of King Charles III.

Retired GP Claire Eason, who swapped a career in medicine to become a beach artist, organised the event to coincide with the Coronation.

She was joined by a team of helpers who used garden rakes to etch the iconic flag into the beach beneath Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland.

Despite the fog, volunteers created the masterpiece before the tide washed it away a few hours later.

Claire, 58, said: "Sunday’s community Coronation sand art event with Bamburgh Castle started in unpromising thick fog. "

"So dense the castle couldn’t be seen from the beach and I walked past it and had to use Google maps to match my location. "

"Setting up was a leap of faith but gradually the mist lifted to reveal the iconic silhouette. "

"It was quite a relief to be in the right spot. The volunteers aged from toddlers to seniors all took part with heartwarming enthusiasm."
