Family transform backyard into DIY ice rink - using plastic liner and garden hose
A family transform their backyard into a DIY ice rink every year using a plastic liner and their garden hose.
The Skori family began the traditional four years ago and say it gives them their very own skating ring from November through to April.
Built by Adrianna Skori, 35, and husband, Logan, 35, the rink in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is used for skating and hockey by the whole family including sons, three and five.
The construction process begins in late November, just before the first snowfall.
The family sets up boards around the perimeter and orders a plastic liner sized to their desired rink dimensions.
Using a garden hose connected to their house, they flood the area in layers, allowing each layer to freeze before adding the next.
"We flood a little bit at a time because you want it to layer and freeze, layer and freeze," Skori said. "
"We keep doing that for a few days until we get enough water built up that it's all solid and frozen."
She added: "Then we use a warm water hose to glaze over the top to make smooth ice."
The family has converted their garden shed into a dressing room, complete with rubber mats leading to the rink.
The rink becomes a hub for outdoor memories, complete with twinkly lights and a campfire, used by family and friends.
"My husband had a rink when he grew up on his farm in Alberta, and he wanted to keep it going with our kids," Skori said. "
"Ever since they were babies, we've been building our rink each year, and each year it gets a little bit bigger as the kids are growing."
Skori and her husband, Logan, a plant biotech scientist, taught their sons to skate on the homemade surface which they maintain with their own makeshift Zamboni.
"Every night we go out on the rink together and just have family memories in the outdoors," Skori said. "
"It allows us to do a lot of outdoor time during winter because typically we're backpacking and hiking in the summer, so this way everyone's excited to get out on the rink."
"We have our friends over and my kids have their little friends over, and they just love the twinkly lights at night-time."
"We have a campfire and make our dinner on it. "
"Grandparents even strap on skates that they haven't put on for years and come out and help the kids."
"It's very magical. A lot of our friends and family really enjoy coming and staying with us and creating winter magic."
