Climate activists poured diluted charcoal into the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy, on May 21, calling on the government to stop public subsidies for fossil fuels.

The demonstration was organised by the Ultima Generazione. 11 members joined the action a few days after the deadly flooding that hit Emilia-Romagna. According to the activists, climate change is to blame for what happened in the Italian region.

The footage shows police officers chasing and blocking protesters inside the fountain.

Rome, 21 May 2023 – At 11:30 am eight people linked to the LET'S NOT PAY FOR FOSSIL campaign, promoted by Ultima Generazione, poured vegetable charcoal diluted in water into the Trevi Fountain to ask for public subsidies to be stopped immediately for all fossil fuels, cause of the climate crisis that has hit Emilia Romagna and the Marches in recent days, devastating their territory, claiming 14 lives, forcing 10,000 people to abandon their homes and leaving another 28,000 without electricity. The local police intervened immediately, and at 11:45 they took the activists away.
