STORYLINE:
On a hot afternoon in the rural community of Domboshava, about 45 km north of Harare, 48-year-old artist Joe Zata harvested Lantana camara as raw material to create various giant animal sculptures and furniture products.
Lantana is an invasive and perennial plant that grows up to 2-4 meters in Zimbabwe. It has spread aggressively throughout the country and is considered dangerous to the environment and livestock, but for Zata, lantana has transformed his life for better.
After selling his artworks, Zata has managed to buy a piece of land to do farming and provide a better life for his family.

"Lantana Camara transformed my life. I'm able to educate my children and I managed to buy a piece of land to do farming and also to buy a truck to transport my products to some fairs in town."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JOE ZATA, Artist
"I use Lantana Camara weed to make unique products, like elephants, life-size giraffes, and some human nests. It's in abundance in my area and my products have a long lifespan and it's easy to bend when I use it."
Zata sees his works as primarily creative, and he strives to continuously improve his creativity to attract international markets and exhibitions that could put him on the world map.
He sells 2-3 pieces per month and some of his works can also be seen on display at various restaurants in Harare.
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): JOE ZATA, Artist
"In the next 5 years, I want to improve my standard to pave my way to exhibit in international markets and international galleries so that I will be recognized as an artist."
