This is the moment police officers used a homemade muffin to coax a trapped German Shepherd out of a canal in Arizona, USA.

Officers from Glendale were called to the scene by a concerned passer-by who saw the waterlogged pooch paddling in the water unable to escape on June 17.

Body camera footage shows Officers Sorenson removing his ballistic vest and climbing down the canal banks, but the dog was too 'skittish' and swam away from him.

To win its trust, another officer named Downey offered to give up his wife's freshly baked pumpkin muffin that she had packed for his shift.

The German Shepherd warily sniffed at the baked treat, and upon inhaling a whiff of the delicious pastry, began to nibble on it hungrily. The distraction allowed the officers to drag it up by its collar.

When the dog was safely out of the canal, it was given the rest of the muffin as a reward, with Officer Downey lamenting: 'There goes my muffin.'

The Glendale Police Department said: 'The dog was skittish and did not immediately come to Officer Sorensen, but Officer Downey had just the plan. His wife had packed him some freshly baked pumpkin muffins for his patrol shift, and they were just the bribery needed for this little pooch.

'Officer Sorensen was able to use the muffin as a tool to get the dog close, at which time he grabbed onto his collar and removed him from the canal.'

The dog's owner, who lived down the street, was later seen walking over to the cops and reuniting with his beloved pet.
