Threatened Seahorses Trapped In Nets Released Back Into Sea In Valencia, Spain
Eleven seahorses, trapped in fishing nets off the coast of Spain, were successfully released back into the wild after being cared for at Oceanografic Valencia.
The marine experts nursed the seahorses back to health, ensuring they were fit for their return to the sea. Divers can be seen preparing the seahorses in a transparent box filled with seawater before they are taken to the Mediterranean Sea near Safor port. Once there, they are set free to swim safely in a coral reef. Oceanografic Valencia highlighted the collaboration with the fishing sector, which played a crucial role in rescuing the seahorses and transferring them to the recovery center. The seahorses, including the protected long-snouted species, were initially handed over to the aquarium by commercial fishermen.
The excessive desire for seahorses as decorative objects, along with habitat destruction, has led to the endangerment of several seahorse species in the Mediterranean.
