STORYLINE:

A fishing organization in Indonesia has expressed concern over Japan's plan to discharge nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean.

The chairman of Indonesian Traditional Fishers' Union (KNTI) said that the Japanese government must realize that its plan will have an impact on the marine environment and public health, which will also be bad for the economy in fish-producing countries.

SOUNDBITE (Indonesian): DANI SETIAWAN, Chairman of Indonesian Traditional Fishers' Union (KNTI)
"In our opinion, the studies carried out by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which amount to issuing a 'permit' for Japan to discharge nuclear-contaminated water into the sea are not enough.
This cannot be used as legitimacy for the Japanese government to dispose of nuclear wastewater into the sea arbitrarily.
The fishing activities will continue to be carried out by the fishermen, but the consumers are worried that the fish they are going to eat will contaminate them.
Now, of course, this will be bad for the economy in fish-producing countries, such as in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia.
The Japanese government must realize that the action it will take will have an impact on the marine environment and also public health.
This maritime issue has become an international consensus because it is a public good."

Indonesian Traditional Fishers' Union (KNTI) is a traditional fishing organization in Indonesia that advocates for the interests of traditional fishermen and the protection of the ocean ecosystem.
