Extremely rare footage shows the extraordinary moment a fissure opened up, marking the birth of a new volcano in Iceland.

The unique video, which was captured by volcano enthusiast Jakob Vegerfors on July 10, shows the crack opening up and lava breaking through the surface in the volcanic area of Reykjanes.

"I and a group of photographers camped for four days waiting for the eruption. We have several earthquakes hit the area while we were there, the strongest one being 5.2 magnitude", he said.

"After almost five days of waiting, we finally saw smoke 2.4 km away. I sent my drone over as soon as I could and captured the video, and also photos of the second fissure opening up".

The video, which was posted on YouTube, caught the attention of several experts and volcanic enthusiasts.

@MrSnowlver commented: "Wow this is amazing!!! As an old geologist, I never thought I would get to see this happen before my eyes. Great capture, thank you!".
