A wildfire on the Spanish island of Tenerife has burned around 600 to 800 hectares of land, causing evacuations and road closures on Wednesday.

The areas evacuated on Wednesday morning were small villages, including Arrate, Chivisaya, Media Montana, Ajafona and Las Lagunetas, according to BBC.

The President of the Canary Islands Fernando Clavijo said that the fire broke out just before midnight on Tuesday is burning with "a lot of force."

He added that putting out the flames would be "complicated" due to the rugged terrain between the small towns of Arafo and Candelaria in the north-east of the island.

The mayor of Candelaria, Maria Concepcion Brito, warned that despite the "worst situation is in the mountainside," there is a risk that the fire will spread to other municipalities and warned that it could continue for "days."

Around 150 firemen are combatting the flames, with the help of 13 aircraft and helicopters, while the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (UME) has been mobilized, with 50 troops already in the area.

According to data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), wildfires have blazed over 73,500 hectares in Spain in 2023, while most of the country is still on "extreme" alert level due to continued heatwaves and drought affecting nearly all of mainland Spain and most of the Canary Islands.
