Stargazers view spectacular 'Super Blue Moon' in northern Thailand
Excited stargazers viewed a spectacular 'Super Blue Moon' in northern Thailand.
Astronomy enthusiasts gathered for a viewing party as the rare celestial phenomenon appeared over Chiang Mai province on August 30.
Storm clouds present earlier in the day had cleared up, giving observers a clear view of the lunar disc shining more intensely than usual.
The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) said the moon may appear 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter because it was at its perigee - the point at which the moon is closest to Earth at roughly 357,185 kilometres.
But the August full moon was even more special because it was also a blue moon, or the second full moon of the month.
Locals were able to witness the rare occurrence through telescopes set up by NARIT. There were also experts at the venue to provide information about the lunar event.
NARIT said the next super full moon is expected on October 17, 2024, while the next blue moon is on May 31, 2026.
According to NASA, a super full moon or 'supermoon' occurs when the moon is full during its perigee. While a 'blue moon' occurs when there are two full moons in a single month.
