Nico is one of the chimpanzees that live at the Mona Foundation in the town of Riudellots de la Selva, in northern Spain, and is among the 5 finalists for the Wild Animal Unique Personality Award granted by World Animal Protection, an entity that wants to sensitize people about the protection of wild species.

Nico arrived at the center in 2004 and is competing for this world prize with a brown bear from Romania, an anteater from Costa Rica, an elephant from Cambodia and a puma from Costa Rica who, like him, also live in reserves and wildlife protection centers animals.

This chimpanzee will soon be 23 years old and has always had health problems. He was the first non-human primate to be diagnosed with Chiari syndrome, a malformation that affects the nervous system, and he also became the first to be operated on and treated.

Despite his illness, he has a very cheerful personality, which has led him to be among the candidates to win this prize valued at 10,000 U.S. dollars, which is used to provide care and protection for wild animals at his facilities.
