The Rafah border crossing, which connects Egypt with the Gaza Strip, opened for the second consecutive day on Sunday 22 October.

A total of 37 truckloads of aid were allowed to cross over the two days -- the first aid supplies since the war began.

Israel confirmed it had allowed the shipments, following requests by the US and others.

A statement from Israel's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), part of the Defence Ministry, called it “humanitarian aid containing only water, food and medical equipment”.

The Israeli Prime Minister's office said on Sunday that Israel was able to check the contents of the shipments and even prevent diversion of them to Hamas once they crossed into Gaza, without explaining how.
