Ireland's deputy prime minister said Israel's bombardment of Gaza was "disproportionate" as he rejected calls for Ireland to expel the country's ambassador.

Tanaiste Micheal Martin said he understood Israel's anger after Hamas murdered 1,400 people in an attack on Israel on October 7. But, he said, that did not justify the scale of Israel's attack on Gaza, where the Hamas-run health ministry says more than 9,000 people have died.

"I believe what Israel is doing is disproportionate," he told reporters at the Fianna Fail and fheis in Dublin. "It's not necessary. I believe it contravenes the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law, which where the concepts and principles of necessity and proportionality are key.

"Too many children are losing their lives and too many innocent civilians are losing their lives."
