A crucial route for transportation, Nesvegur, west of Grindavik in Iceland, has suffered significant damage and is now completely impassable.

Video captured the scene on Monday 13 November, as Iceland and the world waits to see whether the area sees a volcanic eruption of some kind.

The area has been hit with thousands of earthquakes recently and measurements show that land in the area has been pushed up by magma building up under the surface.

All roads leading to Grindavik are now closed, with traffic forbidden due to the deteriorating condition of Nesvegur.

The road will require extensive repairs before it is passable again and it is unclear when work might begin, given the ongoing nature of the geological situation.
