Millions of tons of meat are consumed worldwide every year and, consequently, millions of tons are also lost due to food waste in one of the steps of the food chain.

A study recently published in the journal Sustainable Production and Consumption analyzed the amount of food that could be lost in the process, from breeding to consumption, and calculated the amount of animal lives that this loss represents.

The authors used data on the consumption of pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, chickens and turkeys in 158 countries for 2019. This year was chosen because it is the latest information available from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) that shows no significant impact from the covid-19 pandemic.

According to the research, food loss can occur at five points in the food chain.
