STORYLINE:

Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip endured a night of horror on Christmas Eve as Israeli airstrikes hit residential areas, killing and wounding many.

Surviving residents in the al-Maghazi and al-Bureij refugee camps in central Gaza recalled the "hellish night."

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): ABDUL RAHEM ZEYADA, Gaza resident
"We had been safe in our house, but we were surprised when missiles rained down on us. I am one of the survivors of this bombing. My wife died, along with some children and displaced people.
Everyone in the house was civilian. Most of the dead were children. A barrage of missiles fell on us. They destroyed the entire area.
There is no safe area in the Gaza Strip. The entire area, including the north and south, is targeted."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): Gaza resident
"Each house had about 50 or 60 residents. Here, you can see the dismembered bodies. We are trying to pull them out of the rubble, but there are no capabilities to do so."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Arabic): ABU RAMY, Gaza resident
"They are bombing civilian houses. Yesterday (Dec. 24), they destroyed an entire residential square. This is beyond human endurance.
We do not want aid, food, tents, or burial shrouds. We want the war to stop for our children and women."
