STANDUP (English): ZHANG XIAOYU, Xinhua correspondent
"I'm Xinhua correspondent Zhang Xiaoyu, reporting from Wajima city, Ishikawa Prefecture, one of the worst (earthquake) hit areas in Japan. Behind me is the Wajima morning market, one of the three biggest morning markets in Japan. It has a history of about 1,000 years. After the 7.6-magnitude quake on New Year's Day rocked Ishikawa Prefecture and nearby areas, over 200 houses have been ravaged by the fire and leveled to the ground."

The central Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa reported 82 deaths and 80 were still missing.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida urged officials to mobilize all available resources to maximize life-saving efforts and lifeline supply within the first 72 hours of the disaster at a meeting of the emergency disaster response headquarters on Thursday.

A series of strong earthquakes, with a major one of 7.6 magnitude, on Monday struck at a shallow depth in the Noto region of Ishikawa. The Japan Meteorological Agency has officially named it the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.
