The Liberal Democrats demanded that the Prime Minister should launch a general election for May rather than “clinging on to power”.

Campaigning in Surrey, the Liberal Democrats demanded a general election on May 2 – Mr Sunak has the power to hold the vote as late as January 2025.

Party leader Sir Ed Davey said: “I think people are fed of waiting for a general election. They want change and it really shouldn't be in the power of the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, to call that.

"He's clinging on to power, desperate for something to turn up. That's not right. So we're going to propose a new law next week that the power to call the election is taken away from the Prime Minister, given back to Parliament, and that we should have a general election on May 2."
