STORYLINE:

Martin Luther King Jr. march and commemorative parade was held in New Orleans, the United States on Monday.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the U.S. commemorating the birthday of civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. The date is set for the third Monday of January, which is around his birthday, January 15.

New Orleans was one of the first major cities to host a Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the U.S., several years before it became a national holiday.

Today, instead of leaving from City Hall as in the past, marching began at A.L. Davis Park, the park at Washington Avenue and La Salle Street named for a local civil rights leader.

LaToya Cantrell, the Mayor of New Orleans joined the march with city officials, religious leaders, and civil rights activists, followed by marching bands and dance groups from local schools.

The march went through the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the city's Martin Luther King Jr. Monument on the Claiborne Avenue neutral ground. There is a life-size bronze bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr sits atop a granite pedestal. It was installed in 1981 and created by sculptor Nancy Johnson.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell, city officials, and religious leaders gave speeches during the following ceremony to remind people in memory of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr had done.

SOUNDBITE (English) LATOYA CANTRELL, New Orleans Mayor
"We are reminded of the sacrifices that are necessary to pave the way for us to be here today. I am reminded of that, because I am not even supposed to be here. But it's the work of our people that created the path for me to be. I want you all to be encouraged to overcome because we can and we have, but we have so much to do and overcome."
