On January 17, 2024, the city of Baymak in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia witnessed mass riots following the sentencing of Fail Alchinov, who had been included in Rosfinmonitoring's list of individuals linked to extremist activities or terrorism. The First Department for Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the Investigative Committee of Russia in Bashkiria opened a criminal case under Articles 212 (mass riots) and 318 (use of violence against a government official) of the Criminal Code. The unrest occurred during a hearing at the Baymaksky District Court, where calls on social media had urged the population to protest and seek Alchinov's exoneration. The clashes, marked by violence and the use of improvised weapons, resulted in injuries to several individuals, including law enforcement officers. Alchinov had been sentenced to four years in a general regime colony for inciting hatred or enmity. Authorities are currently working to identify those involved in the criminal acts during the protest.
