A man named Ramesh Manjhi has been lying on a bed of thorns for the past 35 years as part of a public penance.

The man, believed to be in his late 50s, is seen lying down on the sharp thorns with some branches covering the rest of his body.

Manjhi, from Prayagraj, northern India's Uttar Pradesh, believes this form of self-punishment will act as a repentance for sins he has committed.

He is heard saying: "I come here every year to do penance and do penance in the same manner. My guru had given me this blessing that no matter how much pain you sleep in, you will not feel pain. And since then I sleep on thorns. I have been doing penance for about 35 years."
