STORYLINE:
Thousands of displaced Palestinians gathered in crowded shelters in the southern Gaza Strip are facing escalating threats of epidemics and infectious diseases amid poor sanitation and running out of sanitizers and vaccine stocks.
The imminent danger of a public health crisis has been hovering in the coastal enclave of Gaza, where the massive Israeli siege and bombardment caused horrific casualties and damages.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned about the health situation in Gaza citing alarming statistics: over 245,000 recorded cases of respiratory infections, 160,000 cases of diarrhea among children under five, and nearly 70,000 cases of scabies and lice.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): MARWAN AL-HAMS, Head of the Health Emergency Committee in Gaza
"Cases suffering from diarrhea, severe fatigue, and high temperatures arrived at Abu Yousef Al-Najjar Hospital, and this could be evidence of the existence of epidemics within the Gaza Strip that may lead to cholera. The gatherings of residents in schools and places where there is no water or electricity are a bad omen that may bring about environmental disasters after a day, or two days, or even weeks."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): MOHAMMED AHMED, Displaced Gazan resident
"Garbage is widespread on public roads, and we do not see any municipality worker to pick it up. Therefore, we appeal to the Municipality of Rafah to send vehicles to carry the garbage."
According to the UN estimates, some 1.9 million people, or almost 85 percent of the total population, have been displaced in Gaza, some of whom have been displaced multiple times.
