A driver had the front of his BMW wrecked when he was struck by a chunk of ice from the roof of the vehicle in front of him on the highway.

Dash-cam footage captured the moment the large chunk scraped off the roof of a white van travelling along the Lianhuo Expressway in Jiangsu, China, at around 10:40 am on February 25.

Moments later, the flying piece of ice slammed into the front of the car behind and the onboard camera captured it.

A loud thud could be heard as the large chunk hit the vehicle and broke apart into hundreds of pieces.

The driver managed to maintain control and slowly came to a stop, averting a potential accident.

Another scene he filmed shortly afterwards showed the BMW's recognisable front bumper vents reduced to little bits of plastic after being destroyed by the thick ice.

The car owner reported the case to the police, but the dashcam could not capture the other vehicle's license plate so little could be done.
