Henoch Schonlein purpura, also known as IGA vasculitis, is an acute, IGA mediated disorder, characterized by generalized vasculitis, involving small blood vessels of the skin, gastro intestinal tract, kidneys, and joints.
Rarely, it can affect the central nervous system, and the lungs as well.
The disease commonly affects children aged 3 to 10 years.
Male children are more likely to get it.
It is typically an acute, self-limiting illness, with an excellent outcome, and the treatment is mainly supportive.
However, about one third of patients will have recurrences.
HSP is usually preceded by an upper respiratory tract infection, or a gastro-intestinal infection.
The disease is characterized by deposition of immune complexes in various tissues in the body, with subsequent activation of the complementary system, leading to inflammation and damage.
