The High Court in London on Tuesday decided to adjourn its decision on the appeal in the case of Australian journalist Julian Assange, founder of the WikiLeaks portal, so he will not be extradited to the United States immediately.

Judges Victoria Sharp and Adam Johnson, who spent several weeks evaluating the arguments of the parties, considered that an eventual appeal by Assange could partially succeed, so they propose to the US government the opportunity to "offer guarantees" against those arguments.

According to the ruling, the court has given the US government three weeks to provide satisfactory assurances that Assange will be able to invoke the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects freedom of expression, in his defence.

I find that astonishing. Julian is a political prisoner. He is a journalist, and he is being persecuted because he exposed the true costs of war in human lives. This case is a reprisal. It is a signal to all of you that if you expose the interests that drive the war, they will come after you. The Biden administration should not give assurances. They should drop the shameful case that should never have been brought. Julian should not have been imprisoned for a single day. This is a disgrace to any democracy.
