Jacksonville, United States - November 23, 2025 Officer Robert Green, a former lifeguard now serving with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, saved a man’s life early Sunday morning near Memorial Park in Riverside. Just after midnight, officers responded to a call about a drowning person in the St. Johns River. District 5 patrol units arrived and saw a man being pulled downstream by the current. As one officer attempted to throw a rescue line, Officer Green removed his ballistics vest and gun belt and jumped into the water. Knowing how fast the current moves in that area, Green swam to the man and brought him back to the bulkhead, where fellow officers pulled him to safety and provided care until Jacksonville Fire and Rescue arrived. The man was barely conscious, confused, and had swallowed a significant amount of water. Both JSO and JFRD have rescue boats, but Green recognized he could not wait for them to reach the scene. The man was treated at a nearby hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Police said the man was intoxicated and appeared to have been leaving a night out at local bars. The incident was described as a reminder to drink responsibly.
