Hezbollah-Israel violence escalates in Ayta ash Shab, Lebanon
This footage was filmed and produced 31 March 2024.
The Hezbollah movement and its ally Amal had announced on Wednesday the deaths of eight of its members in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, bringing the toll in a day of cross-border violence to 16.
The pro-Iranian Lebanese party announced on Wednesday night the deaths of four fighters and two aid workers and the Amal movement said two of its members were killed, including an emergency worker.
The casualties occurred in Israeli attacks in Naqoura and Tayr Harfa in the south of the country, according to the Lebanese National Intelligence Agency, which also put the death toll at eight.
Earlier in the night, seven aid workers were killed in a bombing of an emergency centre run by an association linked to Jamaa Islamiya, a Lebanese Islamist group close to Hamas. Several health and emergency centres in Lebanon depend on such groups.
The Israeli military said its "fighter jets attacked a military compound" where "a major terrorist was preparing attacks against Israeli territory". The man was "eliminated, as well as other terrorists who were with him", it added.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health denounced "this new Israeli attack on a health centre" which "violates the Geneva Convention" on the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers.
Hezbollah responded to this action by firing rockets at the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona, where emergency teams reported the death of "a 25-year-old labourer" who did not live in the town.
Since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the border between Israel and Lebanon has been the scene of almost daily exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israeli troops.
At least 346 people were killed in these hostilities in Lebanon, mostly Hezbollah fighters but also at least 68 civilians. In Israel, thousands of people were displaced by the violence, which, according to its army, killed ten soldiers and eight civilians.
The United States on Thursday called on Israel and Lebanon to make restoring calm a "top priority" after new hostilities along the border and Israeli attacks on the Islamist Hezbollah organisation.
"Restoring calm along that border remains a top priority for President (Joe) Biden and his administration, and we believe it has to be of the utmost importance to Lebanon and Israel as well," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.
