Girl, 10, dies mysteriously after eating cake on her birthday
A girl died from suspected food poisoning after eating her birthday cake in India.
Manvi, 10, tucked into the chocolate dessert with her family as they celebrated her birthday at home in Punjab on March 24.
Footage shows the merriment hours before tragedy struck, as Manvi's family sang 'Happy Birthday' before feeding her the edible decorative toppings adorning the cake.
Manvi was seen gleefully slicing into the chocolate sponge as she flashed a shy smile at the camera.
However, later that night, the entire household fell sick and began to experience nausea and vomiting.
The other residents felt better the following morning, March 25, but Manvi was found unresponsive in her bed. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors put her on oxygen and performed an ECG test to check her heart's electrical activity.
However, the youngster passed away on the same day.
A complaint has been lodged against the baker, identified as 'Cake Kanha', a suspected cloud kitchen operating from Patiala.
A Patiala police spokesman said: 'The birthday girl and four family members started vomiting continuously. After a few hours, the girl went to sleep and was found unresponsive during the wee hours of March 25. While the other members of the family recovered by morning, the victim was rushed to a nearby private hospital where she was declared dead.
'The postmortem of the body has been done. A sample from the cake has also been sent for testing. We are awaiting the reports.'
Manvi's grandfather Harban Lal said the family fell sick around three hours after eating the cake. He added that his granddaughter had complained of a dry mouth and extreme thirst, requesting water multiple times before falling asleep.
The family has reportedly accused local authorities of indifference and urged them to take immediate action against the bakery.
Local media reported that three bakery employees have been arrested on Sunday, March 31, while the owner Gurpreet Singh is still at large.
A first incident report has been filed against Cake Kanha under Indian Penal Code section 273 which covers the sale of noxious food or drinks, and section 304-A which punishes 'causing death by negligence'.
