In a significant demonstration of military prowess, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and U.S. Navy achieved a remarkable milestone on March 28, 2024, by successfully intercepting an advanced Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) test target. The interception, conducted as part of Flight Test Aegis Weapon System (FTM) 32, codenamed Stellar Laelaps, utilized the Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) Dual II with Software Upgrade (SWUP).
The test showcased the formidable capabilities of the Aegis Weapon System in detecting, tracking, engaging, and intercepting an MRBM target during its terminal phase. The live intercept was executed by an Aegis Baseline 9 equipped ship, marking a pivotal moment in missile defense technology advancement.
Notably, the test witnessed unprecedented participation from U.S. ally Australia, underscoring the global significance of the event. Australia showcased its own capabilities by deploying air, land, and sea assets, including the ANZAC Class frigate HMAS Stuart and an Australian E-7 Wedgetail aircraft for data collection and communications support.
Australia's involvement extended beyond mere participation, with its assets contributing significantly to the test's success. The ANZAC Class frigate HMAS Stuart showcased its radar capabilities, while an Australian E-7 Wedgetail aircraft facilitated data collection and communication efforts. Australian sensors provided crucial target track data, enhancing interoperability between the two allied nations.
The test, known for its complexity, represented the fourth flight test of an Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense-configured vessel using the upgraded SM-6 Dual II missile. It also marked the second Aegis Baseline 9.C2 (BMD 5.1) intercept of an MRBM target utilizing the SM-6 Dual II SWUP missile.
