In Kazakhstan, more than 111,000 people have been evacuated from their homes since the onset of flooding caused by melted ice and snow, according to the country's Ministry of Emergency Situations.

A total of 111,194 people have been rescued and evacuated, with 39,222 of them being children, the ministry said on Monday.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that this was the country's worst natural disaster in the last 80 years.

Due to the severe flooding and the need to allocate financial resources for the relief efforts, the president on April 13 announced the cancellation of the Astana International Forum that was scheduled for June 13-14 this year.

Russia's Kurgan and Tyumen regions also are currently being threatened by floods, as water levels in the rivers there could potentially hit the highest levels ever recorded.

The Tobol river is typically frozen from November to April, with high water levels occurring in the spring. But this year's unusually large amounts of melted ice and snow have swelled rivers, bringing record floods.
