Women in Gaza suffer poor hygiene conditions with shortage of essential needs
[Dateline : Recent]
Storyline:
Women in Gaza are suffering from poor hygiene conditions with shortage of essential needs as Israel's months-long attacks on Gaza have destroyed factories that produced daily necessities.
At the Haifa camp for displaced people in east Rafah, hundreds of women live in very poor environmental and health conditions. Mai Al-Dalu shares a tent with her five daughters. She never imagined that bathing would be a luxury, or that sanitary pads would be a cherished thing, hard to obtain even one package.
Siham Khater is doubly suffering due to the lack of sanitary products, as she gave birth to her son Bassam a few days ago. Khater needs sanitary pads for her and diapers for her son. The family received two bags of aid, comprising large sized diapers. She is using them for her baby and for herself. But bathing is another struggle.
Women in the Haifa camp have the opportunity to shower only once every two weeks, in small portable bathrooms. Sometimes they have to wait for hours before using the bathroom, which is a fertile environment for the spread of diseases due to the lack of running water. More than 600 people share only two bathrooms in the camp.
According to World Health Organization guidelines, a menstruating woman needs a minimum of 20 sanitary pads during the days of her cycle. But this is considered a luxury beyond reach for women in Gaza who can seldom find pads or can't afford to pay the exorbitant prices.
At the beginning of the war, pharmacies had a stock of sanitary pads, but now the stock has run out, and women rely on sanitary pads delivered as part of humanitarian aids. Gaza needs an average of 50,000 units of sanitary pads per day. Many women in Gaza use menstrual products for longer than expected, which increases the risk of serious infections.
