Argentina: Latin America faces water crisis
Cordoba, Argentina - April 21, 2024
[Note: partially no sound]
Many countries in Latin America are suffering the effects of drought and water shortages. Mexico City is facing an unprecedented water crisis: with a population of nearly 22 million, the metropolis is on the verge of a "day zero", when it will not have enough water to supply all of its residents.
According to data from the Organismo de Cuenca del Valle de Mexico, collected by La Razon de Mexico, it is feared that this scenario could occur on 26 June this year and last until September. The shortage of rainfall and inefficient water management are the main culprits of this situation that could force citizens to face days, and even weeks, without drinking water supply in their homes.
The crisis is not only reflected in the lack of water in homes, but also in the impact on daily and commercial activities. Gyms and public parks have been forced to limit the number of visitors who can use their services as part of measures to conserve water.
The governments of Colombia and Ecuador are also facing a critical situation due to the drought, which has led to water and electricity rationing and the suspension of working hours to save water. The high temperatures and lack of rainfall have caused a crisis in the energy sector in both countries because reservoirs are close to their minimum level. In Ecuador, the crisis was aggravated by the suspension of energy exports from Colombia and blackouts have been frequent.
