UK: Protesters Confront MP Mark Jenkinson and Adorn His Office with Anti-Coal Posters
Maryport, UK - April 26, 2024
In a bold display of dissent, supporters of the "Just Stop Oil" movement have staged a protest targeting the offices of Conservative MP Mark Jenkinson in Maryport, Cumbria. Beginning at 7:35 a.m. on April 26th, four individuals adorned his offices with posters decrying his stance on coal and job creation.
The posters, emblazoned with messages such as "Mark Jenkinson is telling giant porkies about coal and jobs" and "PEOPLE vs COAL," aimed to draw attention to Jenkinson's support for the Cumbrian Coal mine, a project that has sparked controversy due to its environmental implications.
As the protest unfolded, a group of around five more supporters joined in, adorning the scene with 'Crime Scene' tape and further amplifying their message of opposition.
Mark Jenkinson's arrival at 8:15 a.m. marked a confrontational turn as he engaged in discussions with the protesters. The presence of police officers from Cumbria Constabulary added a layer of tension to the situation, which remains ongoing.
The protesters presented an open letter outlining their grievances against Jenkinson's stance on fossil fuel projects, calling for his accountability under international law. Colin Benton, another protester, voiced frustration over what he perceives as Jenkinson's prioritization of personal interests over community welfare.
