One of the men accused of supplying the weapons used in opening fire on the house of Bollywood star Salman Khan died in jail but his family alleged foul play.

Anuj Thapan, 32, was arrested and detained in police custody in Punjab on April 26 as the guns used in the attack on the Mumbai home on April 14 were traced to him and co-accused Sonu Subhash Chander.

But less than two weeks later, on April 26, Anuj reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself using a blanket.

CCTV footage shows the house firing incident where a motorcycle rode by in front of the property, and his pillion passenger used a short firearm to fire shots. Anuj allegedly supplied the guns used that night.

However, Anuj's family raised concerns about foul play as he shared the jail cell with ten other inmates under the supervision of at least four officers.

Anuj's death remains under investigation.

According to PK Jain, a former senior police official from Maharashtra, 'any death in police custody is often sensationalised by the local media as a potential murder case.'

He said: 'To prevent such tragedies, police usually conduct regular inspections of lock-ups to remove any items that could be used for self-harm.'

Jain added there was a police officer stationed at the lock-up to monitor inmates and prevent any suicide attempts.

The two suspects, Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal, who are believed to have fired the shots, are also in police custody.

All four accused were identified by police as being associated with mobster Lawrence Bishnoi, whose activities, as detailed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), include kidnapping, murder, extortion for ransom, smuggling of weapons and drugs across borders, trafficking contraband, and illicit alcohol.

Due to alleged mobster threats, actor Salman Khan's added security and is now authorised to drive an armoured vehicle and carry a firearm for personal protection.

In April, the Mumbai Crime Branch announced that it had gathered substantial evidence against Lawrence Bishnoi and his brother Anmol Bishnoi, designating them as the top suspects in the cases.
