Iran: Iranian people mourn late President Raisi in Mashhad

Mashhad, Iran - May 23, 2024

Storyline:
Huge crowds of people have taken to street in Mashhad, northeastern Iran on Thursday to mourn the late President Ebrahim Raisi who lost his life along with his entourage in a recent helicopter crash.

Raisi and his entourage were en route to East Azarbaijan province when the helicopter carrying them crashed in a mountainous area on Sunday.

Also on board the helicopter were Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the representative of Iran's Supreme Leader to East Azarbaijan.

On Thursday, mourners flooded the streets to pay tribute to the late president in his funeral procession before he was laid to rest in the holy shrine of Imam Reza in his hometown Mashhad.

Before being elected Iranian president in 2021, Raisi held prominent positions, including judiciary chief and Tehran prosecutor.
