Oregon State Police have released dashcam footage capturing a dramatic police chase stemming from an Amber Alert earlier this year, revealing the harrowing sequence of events that unfolded on April 23. The pursuit was sparked by the alleged actions of Elias Huizar, a former Yakima police officer accused of a double homicide and the abduction of his 1-year-old son.

According to authorities, the incident began when Huizar's vehicle was spotted on Interstate 5 southbound near Eugene. Despite attempts by law enforcement to intercept him, Huizar reportedly refused to stop, prompting a pursuit that escalated into a confrontation.

Police deployed a maneuver to halt Huizar's car, but he evaded capture and fired shots at pursuing troopers. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire. Huizar then attempted to flee once more but crashed his vehicle on the roadside near milepost 197.

Law enforcement swiftly surrounded Huizar's vehicle, calling for reinforcements as they cautiously approached. Tragically, they discovered Huizar had taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound before they could reach him. However, authorities successfully rescued his unharmed 1-year-old son from the vehicle.

On June 6, following an investigation into the incident, the Linn County District Attorney determined that the use of force by responding troopers was justified. The ruling commended the officers for their skill, professionalism, and bravery during the challenging and high-pressure circumstances.
