Casually discarded cigarette sparks blaze in Beijing apartment
A cigarette, casually discarded by a resident, ignites a huge fire in the flat below in Beijing on May 21st.
Thankfully, no one was inside the flat at the time of the incident.
Upon receiving the emergency call, firefighters rushed to the scene. To swiftly extinguish the flames, firefighters divided into two teams. One team evacuated residents while the other prepared to enter the 27th floor to combat the fire internally.
Upon reaching the 27th floor, firefighters confirmed that the room where the fire originated was unoccupied. To expedite the extinguishing process, some firefighters went to the balcony of the 28th-floor residence and used hoses to spray water vertically onto the balcony where the fire started. Meanwhile, others broke down the anti-theft door of the burning flat on the 27th floor.
Ten minutes later, after successfully breaching the door, firefighters rushed into the burning flat and extinguished the fire. At 12:31 am, the flames were finally quelled, and fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Subsequently, investigators from the Fengtai District Fire Rescue Brigade, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigation Brigade of the Fengtai District Public Security Bureau, launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Fortunately, surveillance cameras installed at the base of the residential building captured the moment when the incident unfolded.
Upon reviewing the footage, investigators discovered that before the fire, a resident on the 28th floor had thrown an unextinguished cigarette butt out of the window. The butt hit the wall and rebounded onto the balcony of the 27th floor, subsequently igniting the combustible materials on the balcony and sparking the fire.
The perpetrator has since been detained by the Fengtai police for further investigation.
