A devastating fire broke out on the Mount Bromo volcano in Indonesia.

The fire started in thick grass at the foot of the mountain when local residents saw thick clouds of smoke and raised the alarm.

Authorities said the fire in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area is estimated to have occurred at around 12.40 local time.

Septi Eka Wardhani, Head of the Administration Section of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Office, said, 'There was a fire on Mount Bromo. Officers are still carrying out extinguishing efforts. Many residents and tourists attended and witnessed the Yadnya Kasada ceremony.

“At the time of the incident, the Bromo area was busy. This can be seen from the large number of jeeps and tourists crowding around the incident location.'

Mount Bromo is at an altitude of 2,329 meters above sea level. Mount Bromo is an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia.
