On the night between Thursday and Friday, a torrent of water, mud and rock swept across the village of La Berarde in Isere in the French Alps, cutting off the village from the outside world.

Four helicopters were deployed to evacuate about 100 people.

With no casualties, all the homes of the village were destroyed.

The French government has promised an emergency fund to rebuild the village.

Other villages in the surrounding area, whose inhabitants were not evacuated, are completely isolated. Electricity was restored on Saturday, but it will take a long time before the roads are rebuilt.

"We avoided the worst. We evacuated about 40 people here. There was a group of young disabled people in a hostel. 00:42 The hostel manager had everyone evacuated with a bus."

Heavy rains have hit the region in recent days as temperatures rise with the arrival of summer, causing snow to melt on surrounding peaks.

In the nearby village of Saint-Christophe en Oisans, which has been spared from the floods but is still cut off from the rest of the world after the road collapsed. Residents are being mobilized to try to create access. The mayor thinks it will take a week to achieve this.

SOUNDBITE 2 (French): JEAN LOUIS ARTHAUD, Mayor of Saint Christophe en Oisans
"Today we anticipated the city hall employees sent to clean the road, to spot the traps. We have to make sure that the ground does not collapse because of hollow ground."
