San Bernardo, Chile - June 19, 2024

At least two people have died and nine others have been injured following a head-on collision between two trains in the Chilean city of San Bernardo, in the province of Maipo, according to the State Railway Company (EFE). The accident between a goods train and another that was being tested but had no passengers on board occurred early Thursday morning. EFE has indicated that the fatalities are two workers from the company Fepasa, whose train collided with another train that was on the main track. They have also ruled out that the injured are in danger and have pointed out that the rescue of those affected has been carried out by the San Bernardo Fire Brigade. The security forces have opened an investigation into the incident. "EFE deeply regrets this incident and sends its condolences to the family of the deceased railway workers. It has also arranged the corresponding investigations and will provide all cooperation to the competent authorities to clarify this accident," the company said in a statement released through social networks. According to preliminary information, the passenger train was carrying out speed tests with EFE staff when it collided with the goods train that was coming head-on along the same track and was transporting copper from the El Teniente mine to the Central Station.
