Milwaukee, WI, USA - June 24, 2024

The Milwaukee County Zoo is delighted to announce the newest addition to its animal family: Mai, a two-month-old Japanese macaque whose name means "brightness" or "dance" in Japanese. Mai, pronounced "May," has been captivating visitors as she stays close to her mother, Rikka, often seen comfortably nestled on her mother's belly.

Born on April 23rd, Mai is already showing a strong bond with Rikka, 11, who is an experienced mother caring for her third offspring at the zoo. The animal care team observes them closely, ensuring both mother and baby thrive in their habitat on Macaque Island.

Mai's daily activities include exploring her surroundings under Rikka's watchful eye and gradually starting to venture on her own later this summer. While she primarily nurses from Rikka, Mai is also beginning to sample small amounts of solid foods like fruits, vegetables, and greens.

Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys, are renowned for their social behaviors and adaptability to various climates, particularly in their native habitats across Japanese islands. The Milwaukee County Zoo provides a glimpse into their natural behaviors, from grooming rituals to peaceful moments of rest.
