On June 17, 2024, a video shared by @renca_nativa showcased crab spiders, also known as Opiliones, found beneath a large stone at Cerro Renca, Santiago, Chile. Despite their spider-like appearance, these arthropods belong to the Order Opiliones, distinct from true spiders (Order Araneae), lacking venom glands and posing no threat to humans. Typically found in damp, dark environments such as under rocks or foliage, they emit an unpleasant odor when disturbed but play a crucial role in their ecosystem by feeding on other small organisms. Their presence on hillsides and ravines contributes to the natural balance of local habitats, making them beneficial rather than harmful to their surroundings.
