This is the harrowing moment a cool-headed cop keeps calm and saves the life of a nine-month-old baby who was choking on plastic.

The tot's desperate mum had pulled up in a car at a police station in Sao Jose do Rio Preto, in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, on 9th July as her baby son fought for breath.

Security CCTV footage shows that within moments, the quick-thinking cop, named only as Officer Oliveira, calmly took baby Miguel from his mother, Sabrina.

As he held the infant face down, balanced on his left arm, the cop gently tapped his back with his right hand to dislodge the blockage.

And when mum Sabrina seems to be about to panic, he calmly instructs her to keep her cool.

In less than 30 seconds, a piece of plastic drops from Miguel's mouth and he is handed back to his sobbing mum.

Local media reports said that the driver, named only as Lucas, had been visiting a relative when he heard Sabrina screaming for help and drove her to the nearest police station.

After saving the baby's life, the police officer instructed them to go to hospital for a checkup.
