STORYLINE:

At least 187 suspected terrorists were killed by the Nigerian military in various operations against criminal groups across the country in the past week, an official said Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, Edward Buba, the spokesman for the military, said a total of 183 others were arrested from different parts of the West African country during the period.

At least 109 hostages were freed from criminal gangs, with over 128 assorted weapons and 3,300 assorted ammunition, comprising 80 AK-47 rifles and 15 locally fabricated guns, recovered by the military, Buba said.

The military spokesman described the operations across the country as "successful," saying in the northeastern region alone the military killed 97 suspected terrorists and arrested 45 suspects during the period.

A total of 832 suspected terrorists, comprising 88 adult males, 256 adult females, and 488 children, surrendered between July 3-9 in the northeastern part of the country, he added.

Troops also arrested 43 perpetrators of oil theft as we rescued 109 kidnapped hostages across the country during the week.
